Professor Srivastava, born in “Deoria '' district of “Uttar Pradesh”, India had an outstanding academic record with his graduation and post-graduation from Gorakhpur University Gorakhpur. (At present: Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur) and joined as faculty in the Department of Botany in the same university in 1965. He went to Ontario, Canada under Commonwealth fellowship in 1970, from where he did M.Sc. (Plant Biochemistry) in 1972 at Mc. Master University, Hamilton in the field of nitrate assimilation under the guidance of Professor Ann Oaks and obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1974 from University of British Columbia on “Responses of plants to elevated NOx '' under the guidance of Professor Peter A. Jollif. He was a frequent visitor to University of Guelph, Canada on a Canadian fellowship, where he was associated with the group of Professor D.P. Ormrod.
He joined the faculty of Life Sciences, Devi Ahilya University, Indore (M.P) as Reader in 1977 and moved away to join Department of Biosciences, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak (Haryana) as Professor on 1st January, 1985 for a very short period and further moved to Department of Plant Sciences, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly (U.P.), in 1987, where he worked as Professor and Head till his demise in 2001.
He published about 110 research papers in renowned international journals of the field, and contributed four books, two authored and two edited. He had completed nine research projects funded from UGC, DST, CSIR, UPCST etc and had guided 18 Ph.D. students, many of them working in various institutions of science learning and research in senior positions and contributing good science in their field. He had also visited U.K and Japan in various collaborative programmes. For the outstanding contribution, he was awarded fellow of National Academy of Science Allahabad, Indian Society of Plant Physiology, New Delhi and Academy of Environmental Biology, Lucknow.
He was conferred with J.J. Chinnoy Gold Medal and Scientist of the Year Gold Medal in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Professor Srivastava was the first Editor-in- Chief of PMBP (www.springer.com/journal/12298), which was started by his untiring efforts in 1995. This journal has now entered into 27th year as a monthly publication possessing Clarivate-JCR (IF 3.023) and Scopus (IF 3.8) in 2022. He will always be remembered as an outstanding and much respected Plant Physiologist and Biochemist of the world. His major contributions in understanding Nitrate and Ammonia assimilation in plants are highly cited by the peers in the field. His untimely demise has created an unfilled void. He is always remembered by his teachers, friends, colleagues , students, faculty, members and relatives and all others who know him as a visionary teacher, noted scientist and a great human being.
प्रोफेसर श्रीवास्तव, का जन्म "उत्तर प्रदेश" के "देवरिया" जिले में हुआ एवं उन्होंने गोरखपुर विश्वविद्यालय, गोरखपुर (वर्तमान में: दीनदयाल उपाध्याय गोरखपुर विश्वविद्यालय, गोरखपुर) से उत्कृष्ट शैक्षणिक रिकॉर्ड के साथ स्नातक और स्नातकोत्तर परीक्षाएं उत्तीर्ण की । उसी विश्वविद्यालय में वनस्पति विज्ञान विभाग 1965 में प्रवक्ता के रूप में नियुक्त हुए। वे 1970 में कॉमनवेल्थ फेलोशिप के तहत ओंटारियो, कनाडा गए, जहाँ 1972 में उन्होंने हैमिल्टन विश्वविद्यालय से प्रोफेसर एन ओक्स के मार्गदर्शन में मक्के के पौधों में नाइट्रेट संश्लेषण के क्षेत्र में जैवरसायन विषय में परास्नातक की उपाधि प्राप्त की । तत्पश्चात ब्रिटिश कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय से प्रोफेसर पीटर ए जोलीफ के मार्गदर्शन में "पौधों की नाइट्रस आक्साइड के लिए प्रतिक् रिया" पर 1974 में पीएच.डी. डिग्री प्राप्त की । वह कनाडा सरकार के आमंत्रण पर यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ गुएलफ, कनाडा में अक्सर जाते-आते थे, जहां वे प्रोफेसर डी.पी. ऑरमरोड की प्रयोगशाला से सम्बद्ध रहे।
प्रोफेसर श्रीवास्तव 1977 मे देवी अहिल्या विश्वविद्यालय, इंदौर (म.प्र.) के जीवन विज्ञान संकाय में रीडर के रूप में नियुक्त हुए और 1 जनवरी, 1985 को प्रोफेसर के रूप में महर्षि दयानंद विश्वविद्यालय, रोहतक (हरियाणा) के जैव विज्ञान विभाग में और 1987 में महात्मा ज्योतिबा फुले रोहिलखंड विश्वविद्यालय, बरेली (यूपी) के पादप विज्ञान विभाग में प्रोफेसर बनकर आ गए, जहां उन्होंने मार्च, 2001; अपने आकस्मिक निधन तक प्रोफेसर, विभागाध्यक्ष और परीक्षा नियंत्रक के रूप में काम किया।
उन्होंने प्रसिद्ध अंतरराष्ट्रीय शोध पत्रिकाओं में लगभग 110 शोध पत्र प्रकाशित किए, और चार पुस्तकों का लेखन या सम्पादन किया। उन्होंने यूजीसी, डीएसटी, सीएसआईआर, यूपीसीएसटी आदि से वित्त पोषित नौ शोध परियोजनाओं को सफलता पूर्वक पूरा किया | करीब 18 पीएच.डी. छात्र, जिनमे से कई वरिष्ठ पदों पर विश्वविद्यालयों एवं अनुसंधान संस्थानों में काम कर रहे हैं और अपने क्षेत्र में अच्छे ज्ञान-विज्ञान के सृजन एवं शोध मे महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दे रहे हैं। उन्होंने विभिन्न साझी परियोजनाओं मे ब्रिटेन और जापान का भी दौरा किया था। उनके उत्कृष्ट योगदान के लिए नेशनल एकेडमी ऑफ साइंस इलाहाबाद, इंडियन सोसाइटी ऑफ प्लांट फिजियोलॉजी, नई दिल्ली और एकेडमी ऑफ एनवायरनमेंटल बायोलॉजी, लखनऊ से सम्मानित किया गया।
उन्हें जे जे चिनॉय गोल्ड मेडल और साइंटिस्ट ऑफ द ईयर गोल्ड मेडल क्रमशः 1996 और 1998 में प्राप्त हुआ। प्रोफेसर श्रीवास्तव इंटरनेशनल जर्नल पीएमबीपी (www.springer.com/journal/12298) के पहले प्रधान संपादक थे, जिसे 1995 में उनके अथक प्रयासों से शुरू किया गया था। यह पत्रिका अब क्लेरिवेट-जेसीआर (आईएफ 3.023) और स्कोपस (आईएफ 3.8) 2022 में रखने वाले मासिक प्रकाशन के रूप में 27 वें वर्ष में प्रवेश कर गई है। उन्हें हमेशा दुनिया के एक उत्कृष्ट और सम्मानित प्लांट फिजियोलॉजिस्ट और बायोकेमिस्ट के रूप में याद किया जाएगा। पौधों में नाइट्रेट और अमोनिया के संश्लेषण को समझने में उनका प्रमुख योगदान इन क्षेत्रों के वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा काफी उद्धृत किया गया है। उनके असामयिक निधन ने एक बड़ा खालीपन पैदा कर दिया है। उन्हें हमेशा उनके शिक्षकों, मित्रों, सहकर्मियों, छात्रों, सहकर्मियों और रिश्तेदारों और अन्य सभी द्वारा याद किया जाता रहेगा, जो उन्हें एक दूरदर्शी शिक्षक, प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक और एक महान इंसान के रूप में जानते हैं।
